Hey Silver, thanks for the inspirational post! Life drawing seems to be that thing I want to do the most but can't seem to find time to do it. I have an art buddy in town and we have promised to each other to keep on each other's butts to go out and draw. And we found a local art league that we are joining also that has life drawing sessions.

I also agree with you about drawing in PhotoShop -- for quick sketching it's a bit overkill. I used Bauhaus Mirage for your class and it's pretty responsive with the tablet -- the software was designed for hand drawn animation and comes with a nice set of blue & red pencils.

I'm also using another drawing app for quick sketching called ArtRage2 (only $25!). While it can't compare to PS, Mirage or even Sketchbook, it's great for getting ideas down and has some nice natural media features. Everything you need is right in the window, so there's very little need to dig through menus and dialog boxes.

Amazing work as always man man. :D

I just love how you capture the subtle movements and emotions as well as contrapposto in the characters and to me; those are the most expressive parts. :)

Btw, I do have a question... would've e-mailed you had you had one. Or maybe you do -

Anyways I digress...

I'm trying to build up a portfolio of characters to send out to animation studios such as Pixar, Disney, Nickelodeon, ect... and I was wondering what exactly does one put into those portfolios? Do I put in my own characters, my renditions of other people's works? Or do I have many sketches showing my various styles?

I would really love some advice. It would be much appreciated.

Very cool post. I'm working on developing my character drawing/anatomy drawing skills as well. I couldnt help but wonder, what software is being used in this video? I'm trying to find a program that will let me freehand sketch without the overkill of Photoshop as you and idragosani have stated. Please let me know! thanks! :)

Nick, I believe he was using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro (formerly Alias). It retails for less then $200, I believe.

Great inspirational video! I think this concept of "memory drawing" has already been a great help to me. I've been challenging myself to invent more and really thnk about structure. Today I found some reference photos of a subject taken from several different angles, and then tried to draw the subject from a completely different angle than in any the photographs. This really put the "drawing structure" muscles in the brain to work. By the way, I just got the "Life" book a few days ago, and as expected, it was truly inspirational!

you inspire people no doubt and also your help (such as this clip) is most commendable. Good on ya.

I don't like life drawing at all and consider perspective a restriction that must be over come. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Whatever the weather keep up the good work fella
